The Origin of Wedang Tahu From Semarang

Holiday Ayo - Wedang Tahu is a drink that made from tofu juice and smothered in ginger sauce. This drink is suitable to be enjoyed in cold weather because it can warm the body.
According to history, Wedang Tahu originated from China and was brought to Indonesia by an immigrant at the end of the 19th century. However, the original Chinese Wedang Tahu is different from the Indonesian-style Wedang Tahu. The shape and taste of tofu are the same but the combination is different. In China, this tofu wedang is sprinkled with small shrimp or dried rebon. For the sauce, use a savory soy sauce filled with salted vegetables, and a sprinkling of scallions or coriander leaves.
Wedang Tahu is popular in Semarang. In this area wedang tofu is made like a warm drink like wedang ronde. The broth uses a stew of ginger and brown sugar which has a sweet taste. For the filling, use soft bean curd. At first, wedang tofu sellers in Semarang peddled this drink by carrying it. To attract attention, usually the seller often sounds a small kentongan that is hit with a wooden stick.
Over time, the way to sell wedang tofu began to differ. Currently wedang tofu is peddled using a cart and selling it by walking around or on the side of the road.
Meanwhile, the people of Surakarta are more familiar with the name tahok. In addition, there are also those who call it by the name of beancurd. The difference in wedang tofu in some areas is not only in the name but also in the topping and sauce variants. For example, wedang tofu in Surabaya uses additional peanuts. Then, there are those who use shaved ice and use soy milk for the ingredients.
