The Meaning of the Word Tayub

As cited from seringjalan, the use of the word tayub according to the Javanese community comes from the combination of two words, namely, "tata" which means regular and "guyub" which means unity and harmony. The word tayub also means "tata ben guyub" which means "arranged to get along" in Indonesian.

In addition, there is another opinion which says that the word tayub comes from the word "sayub", which is a word associated with a type of food that is almost stale and then fermented into tapai.

Tapai the results of the process then produce a liquid that becomes the raw material for liquor. This is the reason that the tayub dance was once often associated with an event that served liquor when it was held.

Tayub Dance Performance

An art performance of Tayub Dance involves about 17 people with 2 women as ledek, 2 people acting as waranggana or a male vocalist called gerong and 13 other people as gamelan musicians and as directors.

In the past, dancers used long cloths, using kemben, scarves, and also sampurs to dance. Now it has begun to be socialized about the new fashion culture wearing long cloth and short sleeves.

With her hair in a bun with her original Solo style and make-up, the dancer looks beautiful and charming. The sound of the gamelan will first start the show, then the dancers will come out to show the beautiful.

Movements of the Tayub Dance

If previously the Tayub dance was performed only on a mat and the distance between the dancers and the audience was very close, now an arena or a kind of stage has been created which aims to provide a boundary between the dancers and the audience.

In the past, Tayub Dance was associated as a place to dance while drinking liquor, now there are rules that are prohibited from consuming liquor and make Tayub Dance purely as an art performance.
