Pehoe Lake in Chile, One of The Most Beautiful in the World

Holiday Ayo - Located near Castillo Hill Village at the southern end of Chile, Pehoe Lake is a beautiful attraction in Patagonia. Its crystalline waters give it an incredible beauty, in which you can see the Cuernos del Paine reflected.

It is also located at the edge of the Andes Mountains, Lago Pehoe is a spectacular sight. Pehoe is a Tehuelche word meaning 'hidden' and is pronounced pay-oh-way.

The lake is the perfect scene to see exotic animal species and unique vegetation. Pehoe is a natural lake, fed by the Paine River and lakes upstream. The name Pehoe is derived from words in the native Tehuelche language meaning 'hidden lake'.

The area around Lago Pehoe is one of the places where the endangered guanacos are found in abundance. These small wild relatives of llamas and alpacas thrive on the sparse grasses and sedges found particularly in the wetlands bordering the lakes and rivers.

Sail through the Patagonian crystal-clear waters of this impressive scenic lake. Surrounded by endemic vegetation, it is a dream spot to see animals and to practice sport fishing.

Relax on its shores where you’ll have a spectacular view of the Cuernos del Paine Mountains. Fingers crossed, if the weather allows it, you’ll be amazed by the reflection of the mountains on the water.

Visiting Lago Pehoe is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Lago Pehoe isn't a lake for swimming or water sports; the highest summer temperatures rarely reach over 60 degrees. Fed by glaciers, Lago Pehoe glows with beautiful blue hues caused by glacial 'flour', or rock dust suspended in the water.

There are many activities to do and most of them are very close to our campsite. Watching the sunset on Lago Pehoe from Camping or Refugio Paine Grande is a peaceful and rewarding end to a day of hiking along Grey Lake or up the French Valley.

How to Get There

It is just a 45-minute drive away is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, offering 24 non-stop flights serviced by 10 airlines, with convenient connections from virtually any city in the US and abroad.

In addition, North Lake Tahoe is within driving distance from Sacramento International Airport which is a short 2-hour drive, and the Bay Area Airports (San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland) are only 3.5 hours away.
