Tulang Bawang, Lampung Traditional Clothing

Holiday Ayo -  Traditional clothes in Lampung Province is called Tulang Bawang. This outfit is one of the national cultural heritage. 

Tulang Bawang is still used today, both for weddings and as dance clothes as a symbol of respect for indigenous cultures.

In the book Lampung Traditional Bridal Clothing and Jewelry (2014) by Al Buchari and friends, Lampung traditional clothes are divided into Lampung Pepadun and Lampung Saubatin or Coastal.

In general, both traditional clothes are quite the same, it's just that the difference is in color. If Lampung Pepadun is identical to white, while Lampung Saubatin is red.

The traditional clothes of Tulang Bawang for men are quite simple compared to women's clothing. The groom wears a long white or red shirt, black trousers or matching the color of the top.

The tumpal sarong, which is a typical Lampung sarong, is wrapped around the knee-length pants. Then it is added with a final khikat or a rectangular scarf that is used around the shoulders to cover the shoulders. 

For other accessories used by brides or for men are:

1. Linen board necklace, three-slab boat hanger with varying sizes. This necklace is a symbol of life.

2. Jukum fruit necklace, a miniature jukum fruit hanger that means prayer for procreation.

3. Sling areca nut, a necklace resembling a fruit or flower hanger.

4. Bird bracelets, bracelets decorated with flying eagles.

5. Tie pigtails or feathers equipped with a dagger.

 

For women, they wear the Selappai shirt, which is a sleeveless shirt with a ringgit tassel decoration underneath, and also with Bebe clothes which are embroidered with satin thread in the shape of a lotus flower. 

In addition, there are several important accessories that must be used are :

1. Siger or sigor, a gold crown typical of Lampung as a headdress. This crown symbolizes the majesty of Lampung's cultural customs. In Siger there is a king of the moon.

2. Subang, jewelry that is hung on the tip of the earlobe, usually shaped like a walnut and made of gold.

3. Jukum fruit necklace, a necklace shaped like a jukum fruit that is strung together as a symbol.

4. Chain board necklace, ring with a small three-plate siger or boat hanger.

5. Ringgit necklace, necklace with accessories of nine ringgit coins.

6. The areca nut sling that is hung across from the shoulder to the waist resembles flowers and feathers as a belt made of red velvet.

7. Various types of bracelets, such as bird bracelets, canoe bracelets, seed bracelets, and thorn bracelets.
