Dumpling originating from China was discovered 1700 years ago and is a must-have food during Chinese New Year celebrations because it looks like a gold ship that resembles ancient currency. Meanwhile in their home country dumplings are known as jiaozi.
Originally jiaozi dumplings were food intended to treat illnesses from cold in northern China. It started in the Eastern Han Dynasty in the 3rd century AD, where a healer named Zhang Zhong Jing was on his way to his hometown in Nan Yang County, Henan, in the winter. He saw many people who were cold and hungry, finally making a hut and giving warm food.
The healer then treats people who are affected by colds by giving special foods that are made with a recipe to get rid of the cold. This food is then called jiao-er which is the original name of jiaozi dumplings. According to the historical records of Sam Kok (220-280 m), jiao-er is a food made from goat meat and spices which are then shaped similar to the earlobe to treat frostbite of the earlobe.
The treatment is then continued to be given to sufferers of colds, where the sauce provides a warm feeling in the body until the night of Sin Cia or Chinese New Year. This is what makes dumplings a mandatory food when Chinese New Year comes. While the name change to jiaozi is because midnight is called 'zi', and jiao-er in soup is likened to a crescent moon, so it is called jiaozi or crescent-shaped food at midnight.
On his way then jiao-zi was taken to the east of Beijing and was called 'bian-shi' or snack. Bian-shi is then called pangsit by Hakka people in Hokkien because of their accent, in Indonesia dumpling is better known as pangsit.
