The Origins of Beard Papa's, a Japanese Eclairs Shop

Holiday Ayo - Some time ago social media was busy talking about Beard Papa's which was closed at Pondok Indah Mall, South Jakarta. The news then gave rise to various comments responding to the possibility that the Bread Papa's eclairs shop would close in Indonesia.

If you are at Soekarno Hatta Airport, the sight of people queuing in front of the eclairs shop was common in the pre-pandemic period. The smell of the eclairs being baked is timeless, as if calling the passersby to stop by. The outlet is a shop for cream puffs or Beard Papa's eclairs.

Unique indeed, the location of this cake shop is strategic, it is in every terminal of Soekarno Hatta Airport and Gambir Station. Beard's Papa also opened outlets at several other major airports such as Juanda Airport in Surabaya, Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, and Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar.

No wonder, passersby often bring Beard Papa's eclairs as souvenirs. It may not be a typical souvenir, but cakes from Beard Papa's outlets offer freshness, taste, and strategic selling points.

Beard Papa's, which is the choice of souvenirs for Jakarta, comes from Japan, Osaka to be exact. Quoted from the official Beard Papa's website, this cake shop originally opened in Osaka in 1999.

Many people are attracted to this bakery and cake shop because of its fragrant aroma and the face of the owner Yuji Hirota with a characteristic white beard. Hirota's face is none other than the character of Beard Papa's logo. In fact, the Beard Papa's brand itself was originally a customer name for Hirota.

Many children asked Hirota about the delicious new product. Hirota was inspired to make puff pastry like his beard and eclairs as a bonus gift.

Apparently, many customers actually like the eclairs as a bonus gift. Hirota had to open a new shop to be able to serve new customers buying eclairs.

From there, Beard Papa's cream puffs or eclairs shop further developed and opened up franchise opportunities. Currently there are more than 436 Beard Papa's stores in 17 countries, including Indonesia.

Another characteristic of the eclairs at Beard Papa's that makes this cake a choice of cross-town souvenirs is the double and crunchy outer layer of the eclairs, so they don't swell easily. The filling consists of whipped cream and vanilla custard cream so it feels different from most eclairs.
