Recommendations for Typical Foods You Must Try in Doha
Holiday Ayo - One of the activities carried out when visiting a country is tasting the typical culinary delights of that country. A country's food will be different from other countries because it is influenced by the culture and habits of its people.
The following are recommendations for typical food from Doha, Qatar.
1. Madrouba
Madrouba is Qatari porridge with various spices in it and usually accompanied by chicken. Made from cooked rice that is pounded into porridge, and uses many spices such as turmeric, cumin, cardamom, ginger, cloves, cinnamon, garlic and black pepper.
The name Madrouba comes from the word “Darb”, an Arabic word meaning 'to hit'. It is so named because the food is beaten with a wooden spoon to mix and soften.
When eaten, the taste will be similar to typical Indian curry rice. This dish is suitable to be eaten while it is still hot so it feels comfortable on the stomach.
Usually Qataris eat Madrouba as a lunch dish. Tourists can try tasting Madrouba at the restaurant at the Qatar Museum.
2. Ragag
Apart from India, Qatar also has several foods such as thin bread or crepes. One of them is Ragag. Ragag is a sweet snack dish in the form of thin bread that can be combined with various kinds of toppings, such as chocolate spread, cheese, eggs, honey, Arabic spices and others.
3. Kunafa or Knafeh
This food is a snack made from filo dough which is commonly used in Middle Eastern pastry dishes. This dish is served sprinkled with pistachio nuts, akawi cheese (made from cow's milk or goat's milk) and topped with honey.
Salma said Arabs usually eat Kunafa every Ramadan and it is an obligatory food when breaking the fast. Kunafa can be enjoyed with a cup of bitter Turkish Coffee as a balance.
