Prepare Your Tissue Before Watching A Man Called Otto

Holiday Ayo - A Man Called Otto is about a grumpy old man named Otto Anderson. One day, Otto has a new neighbor, a family from Mexico. Otto, who was crazy for order and tranquility, began to feel disturbed by the presence of this family. On the other hand, his new neighbors are still trying to get along with Otto.
A Man Called Otto presents a story that is simple but so relatable to the realities of everyday life. Tom Hanks plays Otto, an elderly man who lives alone after his wife dies. Due to his hot-tempered and perfectionist nature, Otto is present as an annoying neighbor in his housing. However, things started to change when Marisol and Tommy appeared as Otto's new neighbors.
In contrast to Otto, Marisol and Tommy have warm and cheerful personalities. The interaction between the hot-tempered Otto and the friendly Marisol succeeded in creating a comedic element that was so warm and natural for the film. Plus, you can also meet Otto's other old neighbor, Jimmy, who is just as funny.
Apart from comedy, A Man Called Otto also features quite strong elements of drama. Behind Marisol and Otto's funny interactions, the difference in the nature of the two eventually creates a conflict, which finally reveals the story of Otto's sad past. The process of building Otto's relationship with his neighbors is really built in a heartwarming way for anyone who watches it.
If you only saw the trailer for A Man Called Otto , you might think that this film is just a comedy-drama film in general with a family theme. In fact, this film presents a much darker and more depressive theme than what you see in the trailer, which is about how someone who is not ready to deal with loss.
Otto, who loved his wife so much, was clearly devastated by her death. Otto became even more angry, increasingly annoying, and lost his zest for life because he could not move on from his wife's death. As a result of his increasingly annoying attitude, the people around Otto did not realize that Otto was already in a depressed state and had strong intentions to commit suicide.
With only the capital of watching the trailer, without watching the Swedish version of the film and not reading the novel, I was quite surprised that A Man Called Otto turned out to present a very depressive theme. Even the audience will see how Otto makes four suicide attempts throughout the film.
Through this depressive theme, A Man Called Otto actually has a deep message about how people should care for one another to be able to save someone who has lost their will to live. Marisol's character comes as an embodiment of a sense of care that should exist in social life. If Marisol had not been there as a caring neighbor, Otto's life would have ended tragically.
With a simple yet heartwarming story about how important it is to care for others, A Man Called Otto comes with a strong message and should be able to touch the hearts of anyone who watches it. Kindness that may seem simple can actually have a big impact on the lives of others. Keep in mind, you should prepare tissues before watching this film!
