List of the Driest Regions in Indonesia

Holiday Ayo - Most of Indonesia is being hit by a climate phenomenon called El Nino. This phenomenon is characterized by high temperatures and drought.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has carried out monitoring throughout the country to monitor the areas worst hit by drought. From this observation, BMKG released a list of areas with the longest lack of rain until mid-October 2023. 

 

Based on climate monitoring through 4093 rain observation posts in Indonesia, as many as 870 locations experienced the most extreme conditions on days without rain. 

 

According to BMKG, these 870 locations have not experienced rain for more than 60 days or two months. In fact, under normal conditions, most parts of Indonesia should have entered the rainy season this October. 

 

BMKG revealed, DKI Jakarta is a province where all of its municipalities have never had rain in the last three months. 

 

According to the BMKG Meteorological Drought Monitoring map, almost all areas on the island of Java are experiencing the most extreme conditions. 

 

Meanwhile, the region that has not experienced rain the longest is East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), namely for 166 days or more than five months.

 

“Be alert to the impact of lack of rain! Only 11 percent of the total number of Indonesian Seasonal Zones have entered the rainy season and a total of 85 regions in 19 Provinces have not had rain for more than two months," wrote BMKG, Friday (13/10).

 

“Be alert to agricultural drought, water scarcity, and land and forest fires," continued BMKG. 

 

The following are 19 areas with the longest lack of rain until mid-October 2023 according to BMKG data as of Tuesday (10/10).

7. Central Java 

8. IN Yogyakarta 

9. East Java

14. South Sulawesi 

15. Southeast Sulawesi 

16. East Nusa Tenggara 

17. West Nusa Tenggara
