History of Türkiye's Topkapi Palace

Because it was he who ordered the construction of a palace for the residences of the sultans, namely the Topkapi Palace.

Topkapi Palace, which is now a museum in Istanbul, is the greatest legacy of the Ottoman Empire. Apart from the Topkapi Palace, the Ottoman Empire also inherited mosques, buildings, schools, and bridges during the heyday of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. The existence of these buildings, as if showing progress in the field of Islamic architecture and its eminent architects.

History records that at least 24 sultans from the Ottoman dynasty once occupied this palace until 1839 AD Apart from being the sultan's residence, Topkapi Palace was also the center of Turkish government in the past. In all, the Topkapi Palace has hundreds of rooms, but only a few are publicly displayed.

The palace, which is located at the meeting point of the Bosphorus Strait, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara, is a typical Turkish building that has beautiful gardens that connect one building to another. These green gardens are filled with large, shady trees.

Built on a land area of 700 thousand square meters, Topkapi Palace began construction in 1453. It was started with Sultan Mehmed II's desire to build a palace as the center of the Ottoman Empire. For the record, Sultan Mehmed II controlled Istanbul after conquering it from the hands of the Roman Empire in 1453. It was from there that the Topkapi Palace was built and continued to undergo various changes until 1850.

Various types of ceramics, woodwork and architectural styles are displayed at Topkapi Palace. At least five people were involved in designing the Topkapi Palace building. They are Sultan Mehmed II, Aluddin, Davud Aga, Mimar Sinan, and Sarkis Balyan. 

With the combination of these five architects, it's no wonder that the Topkapi Palace building is considered the best building to date. This all shows that the development of architectural arts in Türkiye has advanced so much.

It is recorded that the Topkapi Palace complex has undergone renovations twice, namely after the 1509 earthquake and the 1665 fire incident. Along with the times and changes in power, Topkapi Palace has been further beautified. Among them the addition of the Baghdad pavilion after the conquest of Baghdad City. 

And others added the Revan Pavilion to commemorate Revan's mission. Today, the Topkapi Palace is filled with Greek inlaid pillars, large clocks painted with Koranic verses (calligraphy), French paintings, Belgian mirrors and more.
