History of Crocodile Bread, Symbol of Love and Loyalty from Betawi

Holiday Ayo - Crocodile bread is a typical food of the Betawi people which is served on special occasions, one of which is weddings. Crocodile bread is very often found at traditional Betawi weddings, as a gift given by the man.

This loaf which is about 50cm long has a deep philosophy. Crocodile bread has a meaning as an expression of the loyalty of a married couple to live and die, sailing the household ark until the end of their lives.

In addition, crocodile bread also symbolizes patience, a symbol of virility, economic stability, and hope. During the trip, this bread should not be damaged into the hands of the bride. After the contract is completed, the bread will be distributed to relatives who are not yet married, meaning that they will soon find a mate.

The history of crocodile bread is inspired by the behavior of crocodiles, which mate only once in their lifetime. Crocodiles will not look for another partner when their partner dies or disappears. Not only loyal, this wild animal is also symbolized as a sacred animal because of its patience and calm in searching for prey.

In the past, crocodile bread was served rotten and had a hard texture. This means that newly married couples will last a lifetime. Therefore, in the past, crocodile bread was only a symbol and display of marriage.

Currently, crocodile bread is served fresh and fit to eat. In fact, over time, crocodile bread was filled with jam or other flavors that made it taste even better. Unlike the previous version of Crocodile Bread, which was only made from a mixture of water and wheat flour.

No one knows exactly when crocodile bread began to appear at traditional Betawi weddings. However, as reported by dailyasia.com, the Betawi people believe that at first this bread was used to compete with Europeans who often gave flowers in showing love to the opposite sex.

Therefore, the natives, especially the Betawi people, have the desire to create a symbol that can be used as a medium for expressing love to the opposite sex. Then, a crocodile-shaped loaf was chosen with the philosophy described above.
