History of Coca-Cola, Starting from Pharmacist Concoction Drug Drinks

Holiday Ayo - Who doesn't know Coca-Cola? This carbonated sweet drink has become a favorite of many people in all parts of the world. In fact, almost all fast food restaurants provide this drink to accompany their dishes.

Not to mention, many shops, shops or grocery stalls sell it and make this product even more popular. Within a few decades, Coca-Cola remained a giant company.

Coca-Cola was first introduced on May 8, 1886 by a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia, United States named John Stith Pemberton. It was he who first mixed the caramel syrup which became known as Coca-Cola. At that time, he was concocting fresh syrup drinks to treat various diseases.

That said, the initial formula for this drink was made from coca leaf extract, which is the raw material for cocaine. This drink is then blended with added caffeine from the kola nut. This is where the name Coca-Cola was taken.

At the beginning of being sold to the market, this drink immediately sold well. The refreshing taste makes this drink popular, especially during hot weather. This drink became a trend to the newspaper The Atlanta Journal.

Dr. Pemberton himself never thought how big the potential of the drink he would create in the future. He also sold part of his business to various partners. Until finally, before his death in 1888, Pemberton sold his remaining ownership of Coca-Cola to Asa G. Candler, a pharmacist who was also a businessman. A year later, Candler founded the Coca-Cola Company.

Reportedly, coca leaf extract was then removed from the formula in 1930. However, until recently, Coca-Cola denied that their drink had ever used coca leaf as an ingredient, either past or present.

Being in the hands of Candler, Coca-Cola skyrocketed. From the beginning it sold 9,000 gallons in 1890 to 370,877 in 1900. This success made the company grow until it established several factories in Dallas, Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Apart from the United States, this drink is selling well in Canada. Then, to distribute its products, in 1899 Coca-Cola signed a cooperation agreement with bottle manufacturers and distributors.

These third parties were then granted licensing rights to purchase the syrup, manufacture bottles, and distribute Coca-Cola-branded beverages from the Coca-Cola Company. So, this distribution system has been used until now to expand its market.

The company value of the Coca-Cola Company has also increased rapidly in the 2 decades since its establishment. In 1892 or when it was first established, this company had a value of US $ 100 thousand. This figure jumped to US $ 25 million in 1919, when it was sold to a group of investors led by businessman from Atlanta, Ernest Woodruff.

The Coca-Cola Company was then led by Ernest Woodruff's son Robert Winship Woodruff for more than three decades, from 1923 to 1955.

After World War II, Coca-Cola reached the peak of its glory. This product is increasingly worldwide and began to be sold to many countries. The soft drinks offered are increasingly diverse and well received by the public.

In 1946, Coca-Cola bought Fanta, a soft drink from Germany. Subsequently, Sprite was introduced in 1961 as a lemon-flavored carbonated drink.

Two years later, in 1963 to be exact, Tab was born and claimed to be a sugar-free drink. Then, in 1982 Coca-Cola introduced a sugar-free low-calorie soft drink which they named Diet Coke.

Not only developing its carbonated drinks, Coca-Cola then began to produce orange juice drink products. The company bought Minute Maid Corporation in 1960.

In 1978, the company became the only company authorized to sell cold drinks in China. After that, Coca-Cola products were increasingly recognized in Asia and Europe in the 1990s. In these years, which were originally only sold in glass packaging, they began to introduce plastic bottles.

In addition, to continue to maintain sales, the company created new brands, such as Powerade, Qoo, Maaza, Inka Kola, and Thums Up. Finally, in 2005, the company launched Coca-Cola Zero, a drink that claimed to be a drink without calories, with original Coca-Cola taste.

Interestingly, apart from being one of the giant soft drink companies, Coca-Cola then began to expand into the film business. It is noted that since 1982, Coca-Cola has become a shareholder in Columbia Pictures Industries Inc., a well-known film company in the United States.
