Getting to Know the Owner of Sido Muncul, a Very Global Indonesian Herbal Medicine

Holiday Ayo - Jamu Sido Muncul is already familiar to the Indonesian people. In fact, the traditional herbal medicine has also been worldwide. The legendary herbs belong to PT Industri Jamu and Pharmacy Sido Muncul Tbk.
As cited from detikfinance, Sido Muncul herbal medicine has been exported to 12 countries namely Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Korea, Algeria, United States, Mongolia, Singapore, Australia, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia and Russia.
Who do you think is the owner of Sido Muncul whose herbal medicine is already worldwide?
The beginning of Sido Muncul's journey was started by Mr. Siem Thiam Hie (Rakhmat Sulistio) and Mrs. Go Djing Njo (Sri Agustina) who used to be the owner of the largest dairy milk in Ambarawa, Central Java with the name Melkrey.
In the 1930's, this married couple started a bakery under the name Roti Muncul. At the same time, Mrs. Go Djing Njo began to mix the cold herbal medicine which is now known as Tolak Angin.
Armed with Mrs. Go Djing Njo's expertise in processing herbal medicine, in 1935 the couple decided to open a herbal medicine business in Yogyakarta. Although not the first herbal medicine producer, Sido Muncul products are increasingly popular.
Mrs. Go Djing Njo made a breakthrough for Tolak Angin herbal medicine in powder form which was packaged in a practical paper bag. Around 1940, Tolak Angin in the form of godokan began to be marketed.
In 1951, this husband and wife set up a home industry for herbs and herbal medicines under the name Sido Muncul on Bugangan Street, Number 25 Semarang. At that time, there were only 3 workers with the main product being the Seven Angin herbal medicine or known as the Tolak Angin trademark.

Then in 1953, the son of Mrs. Go Djing Njo and Mr. Siem Thiam Hie, Desy Sulistio and her husband Mr. Jahja Hidajat provided capital support and helped this family business. Sido Muncul then opened a bigger factory at Mlaten Trenggulun Street, Number 104 Semarang.
Since 1969, Desy Sulistio's children have been involved in marketing and distribution of Sido Muncul one by one. In 1970, Ms. Go Djing Njo gave the full management of Sido Muncul to Ms. Desy Sulistio and her husband.
In 1970, Sido Muncul took the form of a legal entity under the name CV Sido Muncul Herbal & Pharmaceutical Industry. But 2 years later, Sido Muncul almost went bankrupt.
In 1972, Sido Muncul almost went bankrupt because it was unable to pay a debt of IDR 6 million so that all of its assets would be confiscated by the State Receivables Affairs Committee. At that time, the sales turnover was only around IDR 800 thousand per month. Finally, Sido Muncul released a new product for women's health herbal medicine with the brand Pills Amor.
In 1975, Sido Muncul changed its legal entity to PT Sido Muncul Herbal and Pharmaceutical Industry. In 1984, to increase production capacity to meet the growing market demand, the Sido Muncul factory moved to the Small Industrial Environment (LIK) on Kaligawe Street, Semarang.
In 1992, Tolak Angin launched its product in liquid form. According to detikfinance records, Sido Muncul has gotten bigger since the product was launched. In 1997, Sido Muncul built a factory in Klepu, Bergas District, Ungaran. The groundbreaking ceremony was carried out by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and witnessed by the Director General of Drug and Food Control.
Then in 1998, the Director and successor of the Sido Muncul company, Irwan Hidayat, began to advertise Tolak Angin with the tagline 'Smart People Drink Tolak Angin'. Those simple words are Irwan's own ideas, although simple, but powerfully embedded in the minds of consumers.
But not only there, Irwan still maintains its quality by conducting a toxicity test in 2000 and a efficacy test in 2004. Even though at that time Tolak Angin was already quite famous.
