Sustainable Tourism Becomes a New Trend in Indonesia
Holiday Ayo - The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia, Sandiaga Salahudin Uno says that sustainable tourism has become the newest trend in the tourism and creative economy sector of Indonesia.
During the Tri Hita Karana Forum in Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, on Sunday, November 13th 2022, the minister said that sustainable tourism is in line with the philosophy of Bali citizens, which is “Tri Hita Karana”. It is a concept from Hinduism, which consists of 3 subsystems, Parahyangan, Pawongan, and Palemahan.
Parahyangan is the connection between humans and gods. Pawongan is the connection of humans with each other. Palemahan is the connection between humans and nature. The 3 concepts emphasize living with each other and nature in harmony and peace, with tolerance and without any resentment.
“We see that sustainable tourism is a tourism trend that has become unstoppable and irreplaceable. Because sustainable tourism opens a chance for us to preserve the environment more than we already are, and quoting the term from Felipe Calderon, ‘make money while you preserve the environment,’” says Sandiaga, as cited from Tribunnews.com.
The minister says that sustainable tourism has been implemented in developing the potentials of tourism villages in Indonesia. They will focus not only on the qualities of the tourist destinations, but also on the sustainability aspect. One of their efforts in developing sustainable tourist attractions is by planting mangroves as part of the Carbon Footprint Offset program.
“It is an example of the smart and sustainable destinations development program that we are developing, not only in Bali, but also in all destinations in Indonesia,” he says.
In this occasion, Sandiaga was accompanied by the Secretary of Tourism Ministry, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani, the Ministry’s Deputy of Marketing Department, Ni Made Ayu Marthini, the Industrial Management Director of the Ministry, Syaifullah, and the Ministry’s Head of Communication Bureau, Gusti Ayu Dewi Hendriyani.
