Wife of Former Nepal PM Dies After House Burned Down by Protesters

Holiday Ayo - Massive protests in Nepal have claimed another life. Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, died on Tuesday (September 9th) after her house in the upscale Dallu area of Kathmandu was set on fire by protesters.

Khanal served as Prime Minister of Nepal for six months in 2011. The fatal incident occurred at Khanal and his wife's home in the Dallu area of the capital, Kathmandu, during violent protests.

Chitrakar, according to his family, was rushed to the Kirtipur Specialized Burn Hospital.

However, he died while undergoing medical treatment. Khanal's whereabouts or condition are unknown after his house was burned down by protesters.

Khanal and Chitrakar's homes were also targeted by angry protesters, led by Nepal's Gen Z, who were protesting the blocking of access to social media platforms, such as Facebook, X, and YouTube, in the country.

The blocking was carried out because the social media companies failed to register and comply with government oversight.

The blockade was lifted on Monday (September 8) evening local time, but the protests did not subside.

Instead, they became violent and escalated into broader criticism of the Nepalese government and allegations of corruption among the country's political elite.

Protesters burned down the homes of several high-ranking Nepalese officials and set fire to the parliament building.

The airport in the capital, Kathmandu, was forced to close, with military helicopters transporting several ministers to a safe location.

The situation worsened when Nepalese police opened fire on the protesters, killing at least 22 people, according to BBC data.

Protesters, angered by the deaths of fellow protesters, continued their protests.

As the situation escalated, Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli announced his resignation on Tuesday (September 9) local time.

However, his resignation was not enough to quell the anger of the Nepalese people. Prime Minister Oli's residence was also set on fire by the protesters.

One video circulating, according to NDTV, shows Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel (65) being chased through the streets of the capital, Kathmandu. The video shows Paudel being brutally kicked and beaten.

The anger of Nepalis appears to be unstoppable, fueled by the behavior of the children of Nepali politicians who flaunt their lavish lifestyles and various benefits at a time when most young people in the country are struggling to find work, according to NDTV.
