Rules for Travelers Carrying Electric Vehicles on Ships

Holiday Ayo - It turns out that regulations regarding the transportation of electric vehicles still cover one type of vehicle, namely motorbikes only.

The government, through the Ministry of Transportation, is discussing regulations for other vehicles such as electric cars.

The Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation regulates the procedures for loading electric vehicles on ferry ships through Circular Letter Number SE-DRJD 7 of 2024 concerning Procedures for Loading Battery-Based Electric Vehicles on Ferry Transport Ships during the Eid Transport Period 2024/1445 H.

Director of River, Lake and Ferry Transport, Lilik Handoyo, said that this regulation aims to ensure that travelers using electric vehicles on ferry boats can depart safely, smoothly, orderly and regularly so that risks can be prevented, especially during the Eid transport period with increasing vehicle volumes.

“This Circular applies to vehicles carrying loads in the form of electric motorized vehicles and transporting electric vehicles on ferry boats at crossings which are under the authority of the Directorate General of Land Transportation," he said in his statement, Friday (5/4).

In this regulation, electric vehicles that will make the crossing need to be collected in an area that is specially marked by the ship owner or ship operator so that they can be easily monitored.

Then the area is placed at a distance of at least 3 meters from the machinery space if the space is not coated with A-60 fire protection.

If the machinery space is coated with A-60 fire protection, it can be placed above the machinery space.

“Apart from that, electric vehicles must also be collected in an area that does not block access to safety equipment, fire fighting equipment, does not block evacuation routes and the area must be equipped with sufficient ventilation," explained Lilik.

He added that electric vehicles to be loaded must be reported to the port operator and recorded in the manifest and their loading must meet stability and load line requirements.

“Later, during the voyage, the ship's crew will have to patrol areas with special markers and supervision of loading will be carried out directly by the Harbor Master," he said.

In addition, transportation of certain vehicles with electric motor drives such as electric scooters, electric bicycles, hoverboards, unicycles and scooters on ferry boats may not be carried out during the Eid transportation period 2024/1445 H.

This circular is effective from April 4 2024 and improvements can be made as appropriate at any time.

He hopes that with this regulation all crossing transportation operations can run safely and securely and the public can go home full of joy.

“Don't forget to remind us that the issue of transporting electric vehicles is a shared responsibility by always fulfilling the requirements when loading on the ship and the requirements on the electric vehicle itself," he concluded.
