The History of the House Of Sampoerna

Holiday Ayo -  PT HM Sampoerna Tbk is built on a foundation of tobacco and cloves. The company is one of the oldest as well as one of the leading manufacturers of kretek (tobacco and clove) cigarettes, a uniquely Indonesian product.

The founder of Sampoerna, Liem Seeng Tee, began his business in 1913 by producing and selling hand-rolled kretek at his home in Surabaya. His small business was among the first to manufacture and market kretek cigarettes. Over the succeeding decades, Sampoerna grew into one of Indonesia’s top-tier companies.

The House of Sampoerna Museum is a museum in Surabaya that is interesting to visit.

The history of the House Of Sampoerna Museum discusses everything about tobacco and is also the headquarters of the Sampoerna cigarette factory. The building is in Dutch architectural style, built-in 1862.

It is now preserved as a historical heritage. Previously, this building was used as an orphanage run by the Dutch. Then it was bought by Liem Seeng Tee who we know as the founder of Sampoerna. When it was first established, this building was used as the main factory for producing cigarettes.

The museum has a large central hall, two small buildings on the east and west sides, and an open space behind the central hall.

The building on the side was converted into a family building and this warehouse-like building was used as a production facility. Such as tobacco and clove processing, compounding, cigarette rolling and packaging, printing, and processing of finished materials.

The central hall is now turned into a museum and shopping area. The east side building was converted into a cafe and art gallery. While the west side of the building remains a private residence.

This museum has two floors.

Starting from the selection of cloves as an ingredient for cigarettes, lighters, replicas of cigarette stalls, tools for making cigarettes, some photos, an old bicycle ridden by the founder of Sampoerna to make cigarettes, and several marching band equipment.

Situated in “old Surabaya”, this stately Dutch colonial-style compound was built in 1858 and is now a preserved historical site.

Previously used as an orphanage managed by the Dutch, it was purchased in 1932 by Liem Seeng Tee, the founder of Sampoerna, with the intent of it being used as Sampoerna’s first major cigarette production facility.

This complex consisted of a wide central auditorium, two smaller buildings in the east wing and occidental, and some wide barns with one floor behind the central auditorium. The buildings that stay in both auditorium wings are then turned into the family house, whereas big barns look like a warehouse exploited for tobacco and clove processing, to catch, stick it and packing, printing office and finished goods processor.

Today, the compound is still functioning as a production plant for Indonesia’s most prestigious cigarette, Dji Sam Soe. In commemoration of Sampoerna’s 90th anniversary in 2003, the central complex has been painstakingly restored and is now open to the public.

The original central auditorium is now a museum and the east side has been transformed into a unique structure containing a café, a merchandise kiosk, and an art gallery. The building on the west side remains the official family residence.

House of Sampoerna (HoS) Museum offers a truly unique experience for visitors.
