Kuntulan Semangkung, Mlaya Village Art at the Edge of Punggelan District

Holiday Ayo - Kuntulan Semangkung is a traditional martial arts dance with various death-defying attractions originating from the Semangkung hamlet in the village of Mlaya Ujung, Punggelan District, Banjarnegara.

The sign of the start of the semangkung kuntulan, namely the sound of the tambourine beat with the sung poetry, is a song full of meaning and full of pride for the Indonesian nation and homeland, as well as extraordinary respect for its leaders.

Kuntulan comes from the word Kuntul which is an abbreviation of the words harmonious, gathered and true. The originator of this art is Grandmother Pernajaya. Unlike other arts, art that is full of truth and challenges the guts, this Kuntulan Semangkung art is only performed by men.

According to local stories, this art has been passed down from generation to generation since their ancestors. The silat movements which later appeared to be a dance in Kuntulan were basically SH martial arts, not Konto's martial arts movements originating from Kebumen Regency.

In contrast to Kuntulan Banyuwangi and Kuntulan Brebes who use gamelan equipment and young people as players, Kuntulan Semangkung has several unique characteristics as a differentiator.

1. The accompanying instrument is a flying musical instrument (tambourine) played by the village elders. The philosophy is that the elders who play musical instruments are interpreted as that they function as young guides in living life, and as supervisors of dance movements which is also interpreted as they participate in supervising all the behavior and life procedures of the next generation so that they do not deviate and make mistakes.

2. In the art of Kuntulan Semangkung, all the players are male. The reason why only men play it is that Kuntulan players must always be in a state of high concentration and have a strong body and soul so that they can protect their families from all kinds of disturbances, and both of these things are easier for men to achieve.

3. In this art, Kuntulan Semangkung does not use magic like other traditional arts. Even though they then show various extraordinary attractions, such as Flying Jar, Mowot Wire, Bite the Table and so on, all of them are done by relying on skill and the results of years of practice.
