HOS Tjokroaminoto's House which is Now a Special Museum

Holiday Ayo - The HOS Tjokroaminoto Museum is one of the tourist destinations in the city of Surabaya. The inauguration of Tjokroaminoto's residence into a museum took place on November 27, 2017. There are 143 collections in the HOS Tjokroaminoto museum. The house of HOS Tjokroaminoto was also known as the birthplace of national figures, such as Tan Malaka, Alimin, Semaoen, and Darsono.
The museum was originally the residence of Haji Oemar Said (H.O.S.) Tjokroaminoto. HOS Tjokroaminoto is known as a leader and prominent figure of the Sarekat Islam (SI). SI became one of the largest mass organizations in the history of the national movement.
Tjokroaminoto himself is a native of East Java, precisely born in Madiun City. The house was built in the 1870s with a typical Javanese feel. At the front there is a 1 meter high fence equipped with four wooden pillars, supporting the roof. The floor of the house is yellow-brown mixed with maroon, making it a decorative base for an understated old house.
Tjokroaminoto used to provide some of the rooms in his house as a boarding house. On average they are boarding students who come from various cities. HOS Tjokroaminoto with his wife, RA Suharsikin and their children, occupied another room facing the same direction.
On the back, we will see a collection of photos of young people who used to stay there. There are photos of Bung Karno, Muso, Semaun, and Kartosuwiryo. Uniquely, there is a room that blends with the roof. It is said that this is Bung Karno's bedroom. Aside from being a sleeping room, that's where HOS Tjokroaminoto used to teach his students.
However, due to differences in political ideology, they also act with their own destiny. Their way of life is different. Sukarno became a nationalist and proclaimer of the Republic of Indonesia. Muso, who had lived a long time in the Soviet Union, chose to be the driver of the 1948 PKI rebellion in Madiun.
Semaun had been an important figure at the beginning of the PKI's growth. Kartosuwiryo founded the Islamic State of Indonesia (NII) in 1949. Meanwhile, Tan Malaka is known as an activist for the movement for independence.
In that simple house, they used to gather to discuss, debate, chat or learn religious knowledge from their mentor; namely HOS Tjokroaminoto. The simple house, said Icha, as Maulisa Nusiara is fondly called, has been designated as a Cultural Conservation.
The HOS Tjokroaminoto Museum is located at Peneleh Street, VI Alley, Number 29-31, Peneleh, Genteng District, Surabaya City, East Java 60274. The HOS Tjokroaminoto Museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday at 09.00-17.00 WIB, while Monday it is closed.
