Rare Incident: Swarm of Bees Disrupts Football Match, Players Forced to Lie Flat

Holiday Ayo -

A friendly match between City Abuja FC and JKU FC in Babati, Tanzania, descended into chaos after thousands of bees invaded the pitch.

The incident occurred in the 78th minute with the score tied at 1-1. The swarm suddenly filled the field, forcing referees, players, ball boys, and even television crew members to lie flat on the ground and remain still for several minutes. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Some observers suspected that unstable weather conditions prior to the game may have triggered the bees’ unusual behavior.

“Nature doesn’t care about your football schedule. Dropping to the ground was the smart choice,” wrote one user on social media platform X in response to the incident.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the match resumed. City Abuja FC went on to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory with a late goal.

Notably, bee invasions disrupting sporting events are not entirely new. In 2019, Brazilian defender Dani Alves also experienced a similar incident while playing for São Paulo in the Brazilian league.
