Ice Cream Machines Can Carry These Health Risks

Holiday Ayo - Cold, creamy, and sweet soft serve ice cream is incredibly popular. Who would have thought that this dessert also poses a health risk due to its manufacturing process?

Ice cream, with its smooth texture and tempting sweetness, is a favorite among many. Enjoyed by children and even as a dessert for adults after meals, ice cream is currently booming in Indonesia. Many outlets offer ice cream in various creations.

From ice cream cones to sundaes with added jelly or drizzled with chocolate sauce. Reported by Unilad, Wednesday (October 22nd), it turns out there are other concerns behind the presentation of ice cream.

Behind the presentation of soft-serve ice cream, it turns out there is a bacterial threat from the manufacturing process.

It's not the cold or sweet taste that is feared to be detrimental to health, but rather the manufacturing process itself. To make ice cream, especially in large quantities, a special ice cream maker is required.

These machines have been in use since the 1930s. However, recently there has been news about ice cream serving posing a health threat if the machines aren't properly cleaned.

A study conducted several years ago of 40 samples of soft-serve ice cream found that eight of them contained high levels of coliform bacteria.

This finding indicates that sanitation procedures in the ice cream making process are not being followed.

The demands of serving ice cream continuously throughout the day mean that some ice cream vendors neglect cleanliness.

The reason is that it takes longer to shut down, clean, and then restart the ice cream machine.

"The thickening and freezing process takes place inside a specially designed machine that holds a reservoir of ready-to-freeze liquid above freezing," explained the American Kitchen Test, explaining how an ice cream machine works.

According to expert sanitation inspectors, coliform bacteria don't necessarily cause illness. However, when these bacteria are found on an object, it's a sign that the object isn't being kept clean.

Then came the advice for ice cream consumers to always pay attention to the hygiene of the outlets they visit.

Seeing every corner neatly maintained can be a sign that the ice cream outlet ensures proper sanitation.

One fast food restaurant worker even showed the condition of the waste container at his workplace.
