History of the Grand Mosque in Makkah

Holiday Ayo - In the Islamic tradition, the history of Masjidilharam cannot be separated from the construction of the Kaaba long before the Prophet Adam was created. After the Prophet Adam and Eve came down to earth, they were ordered by God to build a building in a valley called Bakkah (now part of the city of Makkah al-Mukarramah).

However, the building was destroyed by the flood during the time of Prophet Noah. For several centuries later, God ordered Prophet Ibrahim and his son, Prophet Ismail to build a building in the middle of the crossroads of the city of Makkah to be used as a place of worship. The two of them were the first to place the Hajar Aswad and Maqam Ibrahim around the Kaaba. Since the development, the Ka'bah and the Grand Mosque have been guarded by the descendants of Ismail.

Masjidilharam became the center or the main destination of pilgrims, especially the Kaaba. As a result, Abrahah from Yemen, feeling envious and wanting to destroy the Ka'bah, brought an army of elephants to destroy the Ka'bah. But while on the way, all of the team were pelted with fiery stones from hell by birds of prey, so that the team died in a state of broken bodies and holes like leaves eaten by caterpillars. The event happened in the year of the elephant, which is the year of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him. was born, namely in the year 571 AD.

17 years after the attempted attack on the Kaaba, the Kaaba building was destroyed due to a great flood that hit the city of Makkah. The Quraysh leaders agreed to use halal money in the construction of the Ka'bah, as a result the size of the Ka'bah became smaller than the previous size so Hijir Ismail was not included in the Ka'bah. Disputes occurred between the Quraish leaders after the laying of the Hajar Aswad stone. They argued about who had the right to place the stone. Until finally, came Muhammad who proposed that the stone be placed on a cloth with each end held by each tribe leader. Thanks to this event, Muhammad was called al-amin.
