History of Soekarno-Hatta Airport and the Facilities Inside

Holiday Ayo - The history of Soekarno-Hatta Airport or with the official name of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soekarno-Hatta International Airport) began when it was first operated on May 1, 1985.

In the community, because of its location, this airport is also referred to as Cengkareng Airport and refers to the IATA code "CGK".

Although geographically this airport is located in Benda District, Tangerang City, which is attached to the Cengkareng area, West Jakarta.

From the start of operations, Soekarno-Hatta Airport replaced the function of Kemayoran Airport in Central Jakarta.

Kemayoran Airport which was originally intended for domestic flights was considered too close to an Indonesian military base, namely Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in 1928 to 1974.

Kemayoran Airport itself has now been deactivated, while Halim Perdanakusuma Airport is used for military flights, VVIP, charter, and several domestic flights.

The increasing frequency of civil flights is considered to threaten the continuity of international traffic as well as military interests.

Therefore, in the early 1970s, the government began looking for potential locations for new airports, including Kemayoran, Jonggol, Halim, Curug, Malacca, Babakan, South Tangerang, and North Tangerang which ended with North Tangerang being chosen as an alternative location.

At the end of March 1975, a plan was agreed to build 3 runways, paved roads, 3 international terminal buildings, 3 domestic terminals and 1 Hajj terminal at Soekarno-Hatta Airport.

The airport was designed by French architect Paul Andreu, who also designed Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France.

One of the great characteristics of the airport is its local architectural style, and the tropical gardens between the waiting lounges.

After the long history of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, now the airport has an area of 18 square kilometers, with 2 parallel runways separated by 2 taxiways of 2.4 kilometers.

In addition, a number of facilities are also continuously added, especially transportation facilities. Previously, travel to the airport could only be accessed by car or motorcycle.

Meanwhile, public transportation that is allowed to enter the airport area is only taxis and Damri buses.

Soekarno-Hatta Airport has also been equipped with a Skytrain. Skytrain is a train that looks like a light rail transit (LRT) but has an automatic system so there is no need for a driver to control it.

Apart from the skytrain, another facility built to increase the comfort of airport visitors is the airport train.

The Soekarno-Hatta Airport Train has a route of 37.6 kilometers and serves the Manggarai Station - Sudirman Baru Station - Duri Station - Batu Ceper Station - Soekarno-Hatta Airport Station with a distance of 55 minutes. That way, people who want to travel by plane don't need a long time to get to the airport.
