Every region in Indonesia always has its origins, from those based on legends to facts. Lake Singkarak is a lake that was originally formed as a result of the tectonic process of faulting the island of Sumatra.
This tectonic process resulted in the damming of volcanic material originating from active volcanic eruptions around the lake.
This lake is part of the Singkarak-Solok Basin which is included in the Sumatra Fault segment. The Singkarak-Solok Basin was formed from a subsidence caused by the movement of the Sumatra Fault.

This basin gradually dammed up volcanic material and rainwater that fell on it to form Lake Singkarak. Due to the existence of tectonic processes in this lake, movement and increase in size occur from time to time.
At the beginning of its formation, this lake is only about 3 km in size. However, now the size has become 20 km. The lake area will continue to increase every year.
