Originally, Bondi Beach was a private beach. It wasn’t until 1882 that it was opened to the public. Since 1882 it has grown in popularity to become one of the most popular beaches in Australia.
While Bondi Beach is certainly famous and hosts many visitors, it is not a particularly huge beach. It is about 1 kilometer long, roughly 6 miles.
The word 'bondi' in the local Aboriginal language means the sound of crashing waves, a very fitting description for this iconic beach. As surfers from around the world brave the enormous waves, sun lovers stretch out to tan on the fine golden sand.
Bondi Beach was a working class suburb throughout most of the twentieth century with migrant people from New Zealand comprising the majority of the local population.

Bondi Beach is represented in one of the most popular sporting competitions across Australia, the National Rugby League competition, by the local team the Sydney Roosters, officially the Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club (ESDRLFC).
