2. Vaseline

In 1859, the inventor of Vaseline, Robert Chesebrough, visited an oil field. He saw workers complaining about bar wax, a waxy substance that clogs pumps. There he learned that the wax substance was used as a worker to treat burns. Chesebrough researched for more than a decade to find the perfect blend called Vaseline.

3. Safety Glass

It was discovered when a researcher dropped a glass and realized it had shattered into several large, jagged pieces. It turned out that the shards were not sharp because they had not been washed properly and had left behind plastic elements that coated the inside of the glass.

4. Plastic

Leo Hendrik Baekeland attempted to create a substitute for shellac, an expensive product that can burn food and wood. He combines formaldehyde with phenol, a waste product of coal and the mixture is placed on a fire. Instead, he created polymers that couldn't melt under heat. This discovery was made in 1907.

5. X-Ray

X-rays or X-Ray was discovered by a German physicist, Wilhelm Rontgen, in 1895. He conducted experiments by shooting an electric current through a cathode tube. At that time, X-ray saw a strange light coming from the tube. He then tried to cover the tube with thick paper, but light still appeared coming from a heavy element several meters away. That's how X-ray machines were invented. The first attempt at using X-Ray was in the hands of X-Ray's wife, Anna Bertha Ludwig.

6. Match

In 1826, an English pharmacist, John Walker, noticed a dry lump on the end of a stick when stirring a chemical mixture. He tried to scrape off the lump, but sparks appeared. Walker sells them as friction lamps in his pharmacy. The first matches were made from cardboard, but eventually he replaced them with 3-inch long wooden ones.
